数码艺术挂毯、传统挂毯选用化合纤维毯和毛麻布等为制作材料，制作时先在毯子上画出草图，然后用烙铁烫刻出图案线条和轮廓，通过颜料上色后形成鲜艳的图案，再经缝织、包边、编织等多道工序制作而成。传统挂毯制作是纯手工工艺，要有专业基础，工艺复杂、费事费力、成本高， 一幅挂毯需要六七天的时间才能做成，因为这些因素，严重制约了它的发展。
